WHAT IS FLAXSEED OIL?

Flaxseed oil is pressed out of the flax seed itself. There are different methods of extraction, the most effective is ‘cold pressing’ as this method helps to retain the freshness of the oil; cold pressing involves little or no heating and so keeps the oil in its most natural and fresh state.

Flaxseed oil is classed as a ‘good fat’ and is a rich natural and balanced source of Omega 3 & 6 essential fatty acids (EFA’s). EFA’s are crucial in order for the body to perform key biological functions. Animals (humans and dogs!) are unable to produce EFA’s ourselves so it is vital to add these beneficial fats to our diet to maintain overall good health of the heart, digestive and reproductive system. EFA’s also support healthy skin, mobility & circulation and help to balance metabolism and reduce inflammation.

Flaxseed oil consists of ‘short chain’ EFA’s; ALA (Alpha Linolenic Acid – Omega 3) and LA (Linoleic Acid – Omega 6). These types of EFA’s are different to fish oils which consist of ‘long chain’ EFA’s and contain readily available sources of EPA and DHA. Both Omega 3 & 6 in the form of ALA and LA are essential for dogs to sustain good health. Dogs that don’t get enough LA can develop a number health problems like poor skin and coat, abnormal growth in young animals, and weakened immune systems.

As a guide, a ratio of 4 parts Omega 3 to 1 part Omega 6 is the recommended ratio for effective absorption and optimal health benefits. Our flaxseed oil has 60% Omega 3 and 16% Omega 6 so is almost a perfect ratio. Commercial dog foods can contain high ratios of Omega 6 and lack Omega 3 (which is destroyed through the cooking/heating process with commercial food).

ADAPTOGENIC HERBS

Adaptogens are an integral part of holistic health as they underpin both physical and emotional health & wellbeing.

Adaptogens are;
* Nourishing – bring nutritive strength
* Non-specific – act on multiple parts of the body at the same time
* Non-toxic – are completely safe when used over extended periods of time

We use adaptogenic herbs in all of our 9 oil based formulas. Specifically, our Immunity blend, where all of the herbal ingredients are adaptogens, which help to reduce stress, promote calmness, aid focus and support good energy.

Our herbal formulas have been balanced by a holistic vet to work in total synergy.

STORAGE AND FEEDING GUIDELINES

Oil Based Supplements: Simply add 1ml of your chosen formula per 2kg of your dog’s body weight to their regular food once daily, either in the morning or evening. Depending on the level of support your dog needs, you may wish to increase the amount for the first 7 days to 2ml per 2kg of your dog’s body weight, and thereafter reduce to the recommended amount.

For puppies over 8 weeks, feed the recommended daily amount of 1ml per 2kg of weight.

We do not recommend that you feed Proflax Natural to pregnant and nursing dogs or puppies under the age of 8 weeks. Proflax is considered safe to take alongside most prescribed medication, however, if in doubt, please consult your own vet for advice.

Each of the formulas can be safely used without worry on a long-term basis, however, we would suggest feeding for a maximum period of 3 months and then change from one formula to another for a period of at least a month. As with food, animals can become resistant or sensitive when fed the same ingredients long term and their needs may change. Our Immunity & Vitality formula is a good replacement during this ‘break’ period as it helps to keep the immune and digestive systems strong. A rotation of the formulas with their different herbal ingredients is a good way to ensure maximum efficacy.

STORAGE INFORMATION

Proflax Natural products have been independently tested to ensure that their freshness and efficacy is guaranteed over an 18-month period from bottling to opening. Once opened, store in a fridge to maintain optimal freshness. Use within 8 weeks of opening.
